Quality Control Checklist
Comprehensive quality control procedures for footwear orders. Learn inspection stages, defect classifications, and how to conduct effective quality checks.
Why Quality Control Matters
Quality control is essential when sourcing footwear from China. Even with trusted suppliers, production issues can occur. Without proper inspection procedures, defective products may reach your customers, resulting in returns, complaints, and brand damage.
Effective quality control doesn't mean rejecting all imperfect products—it means establishing clear standards, detecting issues early, and making informed decisions about acceptable quality levels based on your market and customer expectations.
Inspection Stages
Quality control should occur at multiple stages of production, not just final inspection. Catching defects early is less expensive and less disruptive than rejecting finished goods.
Pre-Production Inspection (PPI)
- Material verification
- Pattern approval
- Color confirmation
- Accessory check
- Sample comparison
During Production Inspection (DPI)
- Early defect detection
- Process monitoring
- Workmanship check
- Component quality
- Progress verification
Final Inspection (FI)
- Visual inspection
- Dimensional check
- Functional testing
- Packaging verification
- AQL sampling
AQL Sampling Standards
Acceptable Quality Limit (AQL) is an industry-standard method for determining acceptable defect levels in batch inspections. Rather than inspecting every unit, AQL sampling uses statistical sampling to verify quality across an order.
Common AQL levels for footwear: Major defects typically use AQL 2.5, meaning 2.5% defective units are acceptable. Minor defects may use AQL 4.0. Critical defects should have AQL 0, meaning any critical defect results in rejection.
Standard AQL Sampling Table
| Order Size | Sample Size | Major (AQL 2.5) | Minor (AQL 4.0) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,201 - 3,200 | 125 | 7 | 10 |
| 3,201 - 10,000 | 200 | 10 | 14 |
| 10,001 - 35,000 | 315 | 14 | 21 |

Third-Party Inspection Services
If you can't conduct inspections yourself, third-party inspection companies provide professional quality control services in China. Major providers include QIMA, Asia Quality Focus, and InSpec QC. These services typically charge per inspection day plus travel expenses.
Benefits of third-party inspection include professional, unbiased assessments, detailed reporting with photos, and accountability for findings. Some inspection companies also offer production monitoring and lab testing services.
